York Shimmer

York Shimmer  Character Post 59

York Shimmer is a traditional pixie man (one who lives wholly over there) from the pixie forest. He does have some worldly experience in the human realm, having helped his uncle with the harvest a few times. As he says, he's been to the pub, been dancing and knows what's what. However, he prefers his homeland, and intends to spend the rest of his life there, marry a pixie miss (or possibly a leprechaun colleen) and raise children with her. Traditional pixies are intense and jealous, so it obviously pays to match with someone from the same culture who would in fact take it amiss if her man was not jealous.

Life has a curve ball for York, for when passing the falls pool he sees a water maid named Mari and is instantly smitten.

Mari, for her part, is troubled that he keeps on passing by and stopping to stare, but doesn't engage with her the way she expects. Mari, unlike the other water maids, sometimes wears  clothing, as she has a distant leprechaun ancestor, and this, she assumes is why the pixie man keeps returning to watch her.

There the impasse stops until Si Bakewell, a mostly-human acquaintance of Mari, comes to visit her. He's surprised to find York glowering at him from the edge of the pool, as most of the fay are friendly. Mari explains her dilemma, so Si, a helpful lad, decides to assure York there's nothing between him and Mari. York's initial anger burns itself out and Si learns that York understands that a water maid is one of the worst possible matches for a traditional pixie... Si's hapless attempts at advice fail, but fortunately York and Mari find their own way forward.

York Shimmer and his Mari appear in Wish Matched

ABOUT THE BLOG

Sally is Sally Odgers; author, anthologist and reader. She runs  Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)

The goal for 2017 was to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. 2017 is now behind us, but I ran out of year before running out of books. As of February 18th 2018 I STILL haven't run out of books, but many of those still to come are MIA by which I mean I don't have copies and remember little about them. There are more new books to come, and I'll certainly showcase those, but in between times, I'm profiling some of my characters, just for a change. Thank you so much to everyone who's come along on this journey so far!
