uncle, Merritt, lets the wrong person into Castle Torm. Lord Merritt is the castle regent, looking after his orphaned niece's inheritance until she comes of age. He has no children himself, so he treats Allyso as he might treat a daughter, bringing her up with due regard to her history and her future position as the Lady of Torm. Merritt is popular with the local people and famous for his common touch. Allyso is more reserved and suspicious; a suspicion borne out when the crone Merritt invited in turns out to be a dangerous and malicious soulbinder. With almost everybody dead and dying, and the castle besieged, Merritt sends Allyso for help. She is the only one who can go, since she's the only person small enough to leave the castle via the secret well-way.
Allyso has always regretted her lack of stature, which leads people to think she's much younger than her fourteen years, but accepts the fact of being a descendant of 'Small' Lord Torm, who made the well-way. Her desire to be treated as more than a child comes back to haunt her when she's cast out in the world with no one but a spellhound named Tace, an initially unwanted responsibility pushed upon her by a reluctant young soldier in the siege. Allyso is frightened, but her options are as clear as they are limited; be brave or be dead. It takes a while, but finally Allyso accepts only the brave choices will keep her, and her friends, alive.
Allyso Tormblood appears in Candle Iron.
ABOUT THE BLOG
Sally is Sally Odgers; author, anthologist and reader. She runs Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)
The goal for 2017 was to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. 2017 is now behind us, but I ran out of year before running out of books. As of February 18th 2018 I STILL haven't run out of books, but many of those still to come are MIA by which I mean I don't have copies and remember little about them. There are more new books to come, and I'll certainly showcase those, but in between times, I'm profiling some of my characters, just for a change. Thank you so much to everyone who's come along on this journey so far!
