Roderick Skipton

Roderick Skipton  Character Post 42

Roderick Skipton was born in a manor house Over There in 1950,  as the third son of Andre Skipton and Cecily LePorteCecily was an aristocratic and plain-spoken parent, but Roderick grew up happily enough. He spent sufficient time Over Here to be able to get along in the human world, although he was never entirely comfortable in it. As a courtfolk man he was brought up to be courteous and somewhat distant, but by the time the late 1960s rolled around, the dichotomy between the sedate court culture and the pop-age human society had grown. As Roderick's intended bride, Maggie put it, it seemed odd that they were in full court dress for the Midsummer Ball while Over There their human friends danced the twist at the nightclub.
Roderick, having a placid disposition, found this less disturbing than Maggie evidently did, but he wasn't too pleased when Cecily put a compulsion on him to dance with fay girls other than Maggie.
One pixie girl, a brunette in a primrose gown, disconcerted him to such an extent that he wanted only to get back to Maggie's safe company.
Much more disconcerting was what happened to him later, for the night of the ball culminated with an altercation with an enraged pixie man, father of the delectable Melody.
After that action-packed night, Roderick never quite recovered his equilibrium but as he said many years later to his prospective son-in-law, he wouldn't change his disconcerting life for the world. During the 1980s, he and his wife ran a small winery and vineyard called Summercourt Wines.

Roderick Skipton appears as a young man in Midsummer Melody and, as a husband and father in The Kissing Ring. By Sam and the Sylvan, he's a grandfather, helping his grandsons walk the fine line between fay and human.

ABOUT THE BLOG

Sally is Sally Odgers; author, anthologist and reader. She runs  Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)

The goal for 2017 was to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. 2017 is now behind us, but I ran out of year before running out of books. As of February 18th 2018 I STILL haven't run out of books, but many of those still to come are MIA by which I mean I don't have copies and remember little about them. There are more new books to come, and I'll certainly showcase those, but in between times, I'm profiling some of my characters, just for a change. Thank you so much to everyone who's come along on this journey so far!
