Mary Canterbury's China Plate

Mary Canterbury's china plate Object Post 7

The plate in question doesn't actually belong to Mary, but she's the one who drops it on Linda's kitchen floor. It doesn't break, but as Mary says, "It made a good clatter."

It isn't like Mary to drop a plate, or anything. She's a neat person, a hairdresser, and someone who always makes the best of things. She's upbeat in nature...except in moments of stress. She is in one such moment when she drops the plate.

Alone in the kitchen of a daughter who has gone off to work must have seemed a good place to indulge in a good bout of tears. Since her best friend, business partner and housemate, Rachel has gone to meet an old flame, Mary has been feeling envious, jealous and angry with herself for not being wholeheartedly happy for her friend. Hence the tears and the satisfying clatter of solid white china on the floor.

She couldn't possibly have known the noise would attract Linda's landlord from his own domain upstairs. Geraint Trip is something of an enigma, a compact gentleman in his forties who works in move SFX. He has hidden talents and a strong feeling for what he likes in life. That turns out to be Mary.

Several hours later, when Linda goes upstairs to see if Mr Trip knows what has happened to her mother, she finds out about her plate. She also learns that Mary has had yet another interesting encounter with the china.

Between them, she and Mr Tripp exploded a coffee cup.
That's not exactly what Linda needs to hear.

Mary, Linda, Rachel and Mr Tripp all appear in Pisky Business.

ABOUT THE BLOG

Sally is Sally Odgers; author, anthologist and reader. She runs  Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)
The goal for 2017 was to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. 2017 is now behind us, but I ran out of year before running out of books. As of February 18th 2018 I STILL haven't run out of books, but many of those still to come are MIA by which I mean I don't have copies and remember little about them. There are more new books to come, and I'll certainly showcase those, but in between times, I'm profiling some of my characters, just for a change. Thank you so much to everyone who's come along on this journey so far! Since April 22nd I'm adding in places and objects!
