Bucking the Tropes

I've always had a bit of a habit of bucking the tropes, but sometimes I use the to my advantage, by allowing my characters to know they're following a trope.
Trina Garland on Kissing Cousins always blamed the universal scriptwriter when she ended up in "a situation". More recently, Zach Rowan from Man Overboard had a few words for that entity too:

Perfume surrounded him, and blissful warmth stole into his chilled flesh. It was such a cliché, lying close to a stranger after a shock and a chill, and it should have felt either sexy or embarrassing.
You went there? he demanded of the universal scriptwriter in charge of his life.
