James "Fox" Beckingham

James "Fox" Beckingham from The Peacock's Pearl   Character Post 18

James Beckingham prefers to be known by his second name, which is Fox. He has nothing against the name James, but it is a family generational name, with John and James alternating between fathers and sons down the ages. Fox's own father is named Dominic, not John or James. That should have marked a permanent break in the tradition, but his mother accidentally started the whole thing rolling again.
Fox would like to speak to her severely about that, but he can't, because she died when he was a child. The family emblem is a peacock, and the last gift his mother gave him was the book Peacock Pie. Fox still has it, and used the concept to make himself a custom tee-shirt. This choice goes down like a dead balloon with his eighth cousin, Cat Mahal. Evidently, his red hair and heavily freckled complexion does as well. Fox is rather pleased about that.
Apart from losing his mother at an early age, Fox also feels he has lost his heritage, as, until his grandfather's day, the Beckinghams had an actual castle in the family. They also have a strange streak of talent which you might call witchcraft. Fox finds it handy because he can get about by portal-hopping if he's in a hurry. Having left school, he's still trying to figure out exactly what to do with his life, but he's determined on two things. He's going to somehow acquire a familiar (and no, you can't just go and buy one) and he'd going to get to the bottom of whatever secrets eighth-cousin Cat is guarding.

The goal for 2017 was to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. 2017 is now behind us, but I ran out of year before running out of books. As of February 18th 2018 I STILL haven't run out of books, but many of those still to come are MIA by which I mean I don't have copies and remember little about them. There are more new books to come, and I'll certainly showcase those, but in between times, I'm profiling some of my characters, just for a change. Thank you so much to everyone who's come along on this journey so far!
