Zachary Rowan aka The Boy

Zachary Rowan aka The Boy  Character Post 52

Zachary "Zach" Rowan first appeared in Honey and the Harvest Hob. He was simply "the boy" then, a hopeful young man who invited Honey Bakewell to the prom. She turned him down, but he had a memorable evening anyway.

Zach was born in 1990. His father died when he was young, but Zach had a close and loving relationship with his great-grandmother, Shoshanna, and her daughter-in-law, his granny. Shoshanna had a great fund of stories which she told Zach, promising to show him marvellous things when he was older. She died when Zach was seven, but he never forgot her tales and he never lost the feeling there was magic around the corner.

After Shoshanna's death, Zach's mother Delia Rowan married a Russian immigrant named Anton Vasiliev. Anton's son Nikolai was two years older than Zach and Anton taught both boys to sail.

Zach's evening at the prom was the high point of his life to date, and in later years he thought of Honey and her two friends, Mab and Asha, as his Blue Moon girls. He went out with Mab for a few weeks but separate universities parted them. Zach took teacher training and became (to his considerable surprise) an early-childhood teacher. In his twenties, he met Mab again and she proposed a pact; that they should grasp any opportunity with both hands. Mindful of that, Zach took Nik up on his suggestion of holiday work as a casual deckhand. He rekindled his love of the sea and, approaching thirty, enjoyed a double life as "Mr Rowan" to his little pupils and their parents and Zach, the deckhand.

Zach is observant and curious. He is protective of his pupils and anyone he considers his responsibility, and is on good terms with the skippers he works for. He has a bit of the voyeur in his nature, enjoying hearing of Mab's escapades and keeping tabs on his other Blue Moon girls from a distance. He was drifting a bit before Mab's pact, but now he has a new sense of purpose. That, as he discovers, can be dangerous.  Zach's story begins in Honey and the Harvest  Hob and continues in the upcoming Man Overboard.

ABOUT THE BLOG

Sally is Sally Odgers; author, anthologist and reader. She runs  Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)

The goal for 2017 was to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. 2017 is now behind us, but I ran out of year before running out of books. As of February 18th 2018 I STILL haven't run out of books, but many of those still to come are MIA by which I mean I don't have copies and remember little about them. There are more new books to come, and I'll certainly showcase those, but in between times, I'm profiling some of my characters, just for a change. Thank you so much to everyone who's come along on this journey so far!
