Outside (Post 129)
Outside (1987), is a science fiction story set in a vast futuristic complex. Kessy, Asta and Kimma live with their grandmother while their parents work on distant levels. When Kimma goes for a six-monthly visit to see her mum and dad, she discovers they're not on Level 50 and there's no record of their being there. Meanwhile, Granny is alarmed to discover Teacher has been teaching the banned subject of ancient history to the younger girls. Teacher, a crafty self-willed robot, has its own reasons, and as the mystery thickens, Teacher's motives become clear. I re-read this one before writing this post because I couldn't remember much about it. I was surprised at the twists in the plot, and the game of one-up-man-ship Teacher plays with one of the characters. The names, Kessy, Kimma and Asta, show my penchant for creating new names by altering existing ones was already in full swing back in the 1980s.
About the Blog
Sally is Sally Odgers; author, manuscript assessor, editor, anthologist and reader. She runs http://www.affordablemanuscriptassessments.com and Prints Charming Books. (Sally is me, by the way, and I am lots of other things too, but these are the relevant ones for now.)
The goal for 2017 is to write a post a day profiling the background behind one of my books; how it came to be written, what it's about, and any things of note that happened along the way. If you're an author, an aspiring author, a reader or just someone who enjoys windows into worlds, you might find this fun. The books are not in any special order, but will be assigned approximate dates, and pictures, where they exist. If you enjoyed a post, or want to ask about any of my books or my manuscript assessment service, leave me a message.
It is an ambitious goal, an admirable goal, and perhaps an achievable goal. Good luck!
